Case Study: Going Solar with Momentum in Massachusetts

Background

Joseph Rich had been living in his Whitinsville, MA home for a year when he enlisted Momentum Solar’s help in going solar. With electricity prices soaring, homeowners across the country are finding ways to cut out the utility companies and Rich says these increases drove him to make the switch.

“I’ve always been interested in solar,” said Rich, “and now, with the electrical prices going up, it was even more of a decision to say let’s finally go ahead and make the jump and actually be serious.”

Rich weighed his options when determining which solar provider to go with but ultimately chose Momentum after a six-hour sales meeting with a Momentum Solar expert. “When I called Momentum, [the sales rep] was very personal, took his time and sat down with me,” says Rich. “He spent probably six hours walking me through any questions I had. He was very down to Earth and didn’t come off pushy at all.”

The Installation

In one day, the project foreman Joel Carillo Montes and his team installed 50 Q Cell400 Hanwha solar panels with Enphase IQ8+ inverters on Rich’s property. Totaling 20.0 kWh, Rich’s system was able to provide him with a substantial amount of energy offset.

The installation process was quick and thorough, and Rich was thrilled with the work completed by the Momentum field operations team. Montes took great care to ensure that each step in the installation process was completed following Momentum’s high standards, saying “Every house I do, I work on as if it were my own. So I make sure everything is going the right way. And for that job in particular, he was a great guy. It was very easy to work with him.”

Customer Experience

Rich was impressed by the communication and level of support he received from Momentum Solar throughout the entire process saying, “There were questions along the way, but I’ve been in constant communication with them…. The process has been pretty straightforward for me.”

Rich said he appreciated the prompt and helpful communication from Momentum Solar and that it made the entire process simple and swift for him.

“Anytime I had a question, my sales rep would say ‘Go ahead and reach out to [the team] directly.’ I would reach out to him and he would answer within the day, sometimes in a matter of minutes.”

Rich said his experience of Momentum had been nothing short of exemplary,  citing communication as a highlight. “You guys have all been very helpful anytime I try to talk to anybody, everybody picks up pretty quickly, or if not, they get back to me right away. I can’t appreciate you guys enough for overemphasizing communication and that’s a huge thing.”

Going Solar in Massachusetts

Massachusetts offers many opportunities to save money in your transition to solar power. The state has helpful incentives such as net metering to make switching to solar more affordable and homeowners can also claim the federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC).

Net metering in Massachusetts is a billing arrangement between solar panel owners and utility companies that allows homeowners with solar systems to receive credit for the excess energy they generate. When your system produces more energy than you need, the excess power is sent back to the grid. In return, you earn credits that can be applied to your future utility bills.

The Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is a federal tax incentive designed to promote the adoption of solar energy systems across the United States, including Massachusetts. This credit allows homeowners who install solar panels on their property to claim up to 30% of installation costs as a credit on their federal income taxes.

Many Massachusetts homeowners can use these incentives not only to help reduce the overall cost of solar systems and the incentives also to encourage more homeowners to invest in renewable energy solutions. For more information about net metering in Massachusetts, you can visit Mass.gov’s Net Metering Guide. For more info on the ITC, you can visit our blog post Everything You Need to Know About the Inflation Reduction Act.

Momentum’s Impact

“My favorite part of the job is when the customer sees the panels and when they’re happy when they see their meter running backward. They get so happy!”

Joel Carillo Montes, Foreman

With the help of Momentum Solar, Joseph Rich was able to make the switch to renewable energy and take a step toward eliminating his high summer electric bills. Rich was pleased with the support he received from the team at Momentum Solar and the quality of the installation exceeded his expectations. EU’s renewable energy milestones

Recent reports indicate that renewable energy now accounts for more than half of the EU’s electricity generation [1]. According to Solar Power Europe, in 2022  over one million households in the EU are powered by solar and the total battery capacity in the residential sector was 9.3 GWh [6]. This is a considerable achievement for the bloc, reflecting its commitment to combating climate change and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Solar power has been a key player in the EU’s renewable energy and overall economic growth. The solar industry has witnessed rapid expansion, driven by technological advancements, falling costs and strong support from the European Commission and member states.

The European solar power revolution

Europe is currently embarking on a solar power revolution to address its energy crisis and combat climate change [2]. The EU has set ambitious goals to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and significantly increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix [5]. Solar power is expected to play a central role in meeting these targets.

Key developments and updates

The European Commission has identified solar power as a priority in its energy transition strategy, leading to several key developments and updates in the sector [1,2]:

Increased solar capacity: The EU aims to increase its solar capacity to meet the growing energy demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This includes large-scale solar installations as well as smaller, distributed systems.

Investment in research and development: The EU is investing in solar technology research to improve efficiency, reduce costs and develop new applications. This includes funding for research projects and partnerships with the private sector.

Support for solar projects: The European Commission and member states provide support for solar projects through various financial instruments and incentives. These include grants, loans and tax breaks for solar installations.

Energy-Saving Strategies to Combat Rising Electric Rates

As electric rates continue to rise across the United States, homeowners are feeling the pinch. People across the country are worried about whether or not they’ll be able to pay their electric bills. Some homeowners are cutting back on weekly groceries and others are unsure if they’ll be able to afford a full tank of gas [6].  As demand for electricity grows and infrastructure ages, it’s essential to be aware of the factors driving these increases.

Understanding the reasons behind rising electric rates can help consumers make informed decisions about their energy usage and explore alternative options to reduce their energy bills. One of the most fruitful alternatives (and one that can put money back in your pocket), is solar power.

As energy costs rise, ensuring your HVAC system is efficient and well-maintained becomes increasingly important. A reliable, high-quality HVAC service can help keep your home comfortable year-round while reducing energy consumption and expenses. For optimal performance, trust Climate Experts expertise in handling everything from routine maintenance to major repairs, ensuring your system runs smoothly. Why are energy rates on a constant rise?

Increased demand

One of the primary drivers of rising electric rates is the increased demand for electricity. As the population grows and people rely more on electronic devices, the demand for power surges. This heightened demand puts pressure on utility companies to generate more electricity, resulting in higher costs for consumers [1].

Aging infrastructure

Another factor contributing to rising electric rates is an aging infrastructure. As the nation’s power grid continues to age, utility companies must invest in upgrades and repairs to keep it functioning. These costs are often passed on to consumers in the form of rate increases [1]. The US has put a lot of energy and resources into preparing the power grid, but it still isn’t enough. After investing billions to reinforce old power plants so that homeowners could have power in the cold, the utility companies still couldn’t manage: “the equipment at natural gas and coal-powered plants throughout the south-east froze” [5].

Fluctuating fuel prices

The cost of generating electricity is also affected by fluctuations in fuel prices. When the price of natural gas or other fossil fuels increases, utility companies may need to raise electric rates to cover their costs. For example, in Massachusetts, residents have been shocked by recent hikes in utility bills attributed to the increased cost of natural gas [2].

“The other day we got our bill and my wife said to me, ‘Kevin, the bill came’ and she pounced out that number and I was like, I totally blocked it out, because it was absurd,” National Grid customer Kevin DeForge said, “from a $90 bill a month to $360 some odd dollars.” – NBC Boston

How can you save money on your electric bill?

Implement energy-saving measures at home

Taking simple steps to conserve energy in your home can help reduce your electricity bill. Some easy ways to save on energy costs include sealing gaps around windows and doors, upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and using LED light bulbs [3]. Additionally, consider installing a programmable thermostat and regularly maintaining your HVAC system to improve its efficiency.

Optimize your energy usage

Being mindful of when and how you use electricity can lead to significant savings. For example,  you can plan to complete high-energy-consuming tasks, such as laundry or dishwashing, during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower [4]. Also, consider using power strips to turn off electronics when not in use and unplug chargers to eliminate standby or “ghost” power consumption.

Make the switch to solar with Momentum Solar

One of the most effective ways to lower your energy bill and protect yourself from rising electricity rates is to switch to solar power. It is important to note that your  payback period may vary depending on factors such as your energy usage, the size of your solar system and your location.

Analyzing your energy usage

Before installing solar panels, it’s essential to evaluate your energy usage to determine the optimal solar system size for your needs. Our expert design team will assess your energy consumption and help you design a system that meets your energy requirements and fits your budget.

For homeowners who consume a lot of power, solar panels can be a game-changer in reducing energy costs. By generating electricity through solar panels, you can directly offset the energy you would typically draw from the grid, ultimately reducing your electricity bill [1].

Moreover, solar panels can serve as a hedge against increasing electricity rates, providing long-term savings and predictable energy costs. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average residential electricity rate in the United States has steadily risen over the past decade [1]. By investing in solar panels, you can protect yourself against these escalating costs, enjoying a fixed rate for the energy you produce.

Opting for energy storage with solutions like our exclusive battery storage partnership with Enphase can further enhance the benefits of solar energy. With a battery system, you can store excess energy produced by your solar panels for use during peak hours or when the grid is down. This not only increases your energy independence but also allows you to maintain power during blackouts and outages, ensuring your home remains functional in times of need [2].

By combining solar panels with energy storage, you can achieve complete off-grid living, relying solely on the power generated and stored by your solar system. This not only benefits the environment by reducing your carbon footprint but also offers peace of mind knowing that your home will have power even when the electric lines are out.

Think solar batteries are for you? Click the “Free Quote” button at the top of this page to get started today!

Governmental tax incentives

Homeowners who decide to switch to solar can benefit from various federal, state and local tax incentives that make solar energy more affordable and attractive. One of the primary federal incentives is the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which allows homeowners to claim a percentage of the cost of their solar installation as a credit on their federal income taxes. This tax credit has played a significant role in making solar energy more accessible and affordable for homeowners across the United States.

For more information about the Solar Investment Tax Credit, visit our blog: Everything You Need to Know About the Inflation Reduction Act.

In addition to federal incentives, many states and local governments offer tax credits, rebates and other incentives to encourage the adoption of solar energy. For example, in New York, homeowners can benefit from state tax credits, as well as local property tax exemptions and incentives provided by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority [4, 5]. Similarly, New Jersey offers Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), which allow solar system owners to earn credits for the electricity they generate and sell them to utilities to help meet state renewable energy requirements [6, 7, 8] If you live in the Northeast, you can find more info about your state incentives here

These federal, state and local tax incentives significantly reduce the upfront cost of solar installations, making solar energy more accessible to homeowners across the country. By taking advantage of these incentives, homeowners can maximize their financial benefits and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

You might be wondering how solar panels perform on cloudy or rainy days. Good news! Solar panels can still collect energy from the sun on cloudy days and there are ways to keep your home powered up during these times!

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), solar panels can produce well even on a cloudy day [4]. Solar panels can also work in winter conditions, as snow typically melts and slides off the panels easily, allowing them to continue generating electricity [5]. So, even when the weather isn’t perfect, your solar panels will still help you save on your energy bills.

If you opt for battery storage for your system, you’ll be even less affected when bad weather occurs. Battery backups are a great addition to your home’s solar system and can help maximize savings throughout the year.

At Momentum, we’re proud to offer Enphase energy storage solutions to help you make the most of your solar energy. By storing the excess energy your solar panels produce, you can use that energy later when the sun isn’t shining, such as at night or during cloudy days. This way, you can further reduce your reliance on grid electricity, enjoy greater energy independence and maximize your savings.

Having storage is useful when dealing with power outages. Whether it’s an incoming or a sweeping summer thunderstorm, Enphase can keep your home powered up for multiple days or even weeks, depending on your storage capacity.

How Solar Protects from Utility Company Rate Hikes

Utility company price hikes strike again! We’ve talked about it before when it happened in Jacksonville and it continues to affect cities across the United States. Now, homeowners in New Jersey are faced with price hikes of up to nearly 7% and, for many, it’s time to start thinking about a switch to renewable energy sources like solar [5].

What’s happening in Atlantic City?

On February 8, the utility company, Atlantic City Electric, proposed a rate increase that was approved by the NJ Board of Public Utilities. The increase will result in a typical residential customer seeing an average additional $12 per month on their bill, that’s an extra $144 per year. The utility company, which serves around 565,000 customers in South Jersey and Ocean County, will rake in more than  $104.8 million from its customers through this increase [3].

According to app.com, “an average Atlantic City electric customer who uses 669 kilowatt hours per month will see monthly bills rise by 8.8%, or about $12.22, to $151.04. The increase would come through the utility’s delivery rate, which it uses to pay its expense and fuel its profit.”

Atlantic City Electric is not the only company in New Jersey jacking up its prices. State-wide, prices are skyrocketing. Rockland Electric Company customers will see an increase of 6.9% which will affect over 72,000 customers while other companies’ rates are being raised anywhere from 3.3% to 4.1% [4].

Another concern for Atlantic City homeowners is rolling blackouts. Atlantic City Electric’s rate increase proposal cited the need to invest in infrastructure improvements to prevent future blackouts and improve grid reliability [3].

By installing solar panels and combining them with battery storage solutions, you can increase your energy independence and reduce your reliance on the grid, minimizing the impact of blackouts on your daily life. Rates are rising all over the US

Homeowners across the U.S. have been hit by rate hikes from coast to coast. We’ve covered it nationwide and, more recently, when the Jacksonville Electric Authority voted unanimously to raise base rates in the Jacksonville area.

In 2022, consumers paid 14.3% more for electricity than in the previous year [1]. In 2023, energy bills continue to skyrocket. Even before political tension, the World Bank forecasted that energy prices this year would “be 75% above their average over the past five years” [2].

How to Save on Your Electric Bill Despite the Constant Price Spikes

In Jacksonville, homeowners just like you are facing an increase in their energy bills after a major electric company raised its base cost. This can be an overwhelming concern for households struggling financially and for those just looking to make their dollar last. However, there are ways to reduce energy costs and save money. Momentum Solar is here to share some practical energy-saving tips you can implement to start saving money.

This week, the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) board voted unanimously to raise the “base rate” portion of electric bills for its residents. JEA, says “their goal is to continually plan for reliable, affordable, and sustainable services for the community.” However, these bill increases will affect thousands of homeowners across the Jacksonville area [1].

Effective this April, the price spike could increase the rates from $5.50 per person to $15 per person. This increase will be their first in 30 years, with a JEA spokesperson telling Jacksonville’s First Coast News that the increase will provide them “with stability and our revenue that will allow us to serve customers long term” [1].

With natural gas costs around the world at highs, electric bills around the U.S. everywhere are taking hits. JEA cites the reason for this price hike as increased fuel costs on their end. The JEA rate increase will negatively impact homeowners who use less electricity and are more thrifty by increasing their monthly bills [2].

The solution? A cleaner and more affordable alternative to relying on power companies and natural gas usage is solar power! Get started today by clicking the “FREE QUOTE” button at the top of the page.

How can solar panels help you?

Investing in solar panels is investing in your future, both environmentally and economically. Oil prices are at all-time highs and utility companies around the U.S. are raising rates for homeownersー this isn’t just happening in Jacksonville. Going solar has many cost-saving benefits but it’s important to know that it will take time for you to see those savings. When you switch, you can reduce your electricity bills and minimize the impact of these rate adjustments.

Upfront costs for solar panels are lower than ever before! In the last 10 years, they have dropped by an average of 60%. The average cost right now is $20,000 for a system but depending on variables like storage and amount of panels, you could pay more, or a lot less [3].

A payback period is the amount of time it takes for your solar panels to make up for their initial cost. After you buy your panels and make it past the payback period (which can be as short as six years), you can start saving a lot of money with solar [3].

For more information on how solar can save you money in the long run, visit this blog where we break down upfront costs, payback periods, the solar tax credit and more.

If you’re in a situation like Jacksonville homeowners are in now, there are two great options when it comes to solar. You can go completely off-grid and cut ties with utility companies when you purchase battery storage, or you can stay grid-tied and no longer rely on utility companies for power, but stay connected when you need it.

Going off-grid

Going off-grid means you are fully in control. You no longer pull energy from the grid and are self-sustaining. Great for people who want full autonomy and freedom from utility companies like JEA, it offers self-reliance and independence. The best way to achieve living off the grid is through the purchase of battery storage solutions, which we offer via our exclusive partnership with Enphase.

Going off-grid is a great option because you won’t be affected if the grid goes down! Having solar and storage has saved so many homeowners this season from winter storms. You can check out our blog, How Solar Can Protect from Power Outages to learn more about how panels can keep you safe during hazardous weather.

Obviously, the key to being able to go off-grid is power storage. When you go off-grid, you should have a way to store collected energy so that in the event of a power outage, you can keep chugging along for days or even weeks. When everyone in your neighborhood is out of power, you’ll be pulling energy from your batteries and still collecting energy from the sun.

With Momentum Solar’s Enphase program, there are many storage options to choose from. This program allows homeowners to store excess solar energy produced during the day for use during power outages or during peak energy usage times. This can help homeowners avoid peak energy rates and reduce their overall energy bills. With the unpredictable weather patterns in Jacksonville, having a backup source of energy is crucial, and the Enphase program can provide homeowners with peace of mind and significant savings.

To learn more about Enphase and talk to a local sales representative, call 1-888-MOMENTUM today!

Staying grid-tied

Staying grid-tied means your home is connected to power provided by the utility company and your solar panels at the same time. Your home will draw power from your panels, but when you run out it will draw power from the grid to compensate.

This is an option for people who want to supplement their utility bills by getting most of their power from the sun, but don’t want to install the larger storage options for their homes. A grid-tied homeowner will have utility bills, but they can be a lot lower, or even nonexistent in sunnier months after your system is up and running.

If you’re from Jacksonville, this would mean that you can draw power from the sun, but on a cloudy day, if you don’t have enough banked, your local power company will have your back.

How to get started

The issues faced by the Jacksonville community are the same millions of homeowners around the U.S. are dealing with since natural gas and energy prices are rising higher and higher. Going solar can help you put more money back into your pocket by helping you break away from the grid 一 either completely or partially.

Rising energy bills can be a major concern for homeowners, but there are ways to cut costs and save money. By making the switch to solar, Jacksonville residents can reduce their energy bills and live more sustainably. Moreover, investing in renewable energy sources like solar panels can also help homeowners to become more energy-independent and save money in the long run. With these simple measures, homeowners can take control of their energy usage and reduce their monthly bills.

Going solar will save you so much money in the long run, and we didn’t even get into the positive environmental impact it can have. Ready for lower energy bills? Call 1-888-MOMENTUM!
